RETRO ALIEN DRAG QUEEN

STYLIZED 3D SCULPT

Blender, Nomad Sculpt, Substance Painter, After Effects

Juno Birch is a retro-inspired alien queen from Manchester, known for her otherwordly makeup, comedy, and sculptures. In an attempt to create a 3D Character that fits into a cartoon world, I sculpted this queen in Nomad Sculpt with the intention of a stylized render. She is fully handpainted in Adobe Substance Painter (color maps below!), and rendered in Blender using grease pencil outlines and a toon shader that separates smooth shadows into blocks of color (process photos below). To emphasize her 3D form, I placed her in front of a curved background in the 3D scene, offsetting the foreground, middleground, and background from each other, and added 2D motion graphics in After Effects. Yes, that’s happening!
